The idea was that once a month, all children under five in the Rotherham area would be sent a book. Sadly, cutbacks have seen Dolly’s scheme withering on the vine. Here, Sarfraz Manzoor goes to Dollywood to hear from Dolly herself why she thinks good books enhance a child’s life.
Swapping Psalms For Pop Songs
11AM, RADIO 4 (FM) The Sunday Assembly began in London, and has now spread across the world. The stand-up comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans got things off the ground by getting speakers, such as Sandi Toksvig, to speak on the meaning of life, then having the whole congregation belt out life-affirming pop songs. Mark Vernon explores the phenomenon of this non-religious church.

1PM, BBC 6 MUSIC Lucy Porter joins Mark Radcliffe in an Edinburgh studio this lunchtime. Lucy, a writer and comedian, is an Edinburgh Fringe regular. She’s doing a new stand-up show at this year’s festival, and gives Mark a preview, plus a guide to other Fringe comedy.

7PM, RADIO 2 This week, Desmond plays a selection of tracks on the subject of riddles and mysteries. Johnny Nash’s There Are More Questions Than Answers, Lois Lane’s Riddle Song and Mario Lanza’s Ah, Sweet Mystery Of Life are all on the list.
