New York: America’s Busiest City

9PM, BBC2 New York City – Manhattan Island, specifically – is an aweinspiring place. Walking down those streets, with impossibly tall buildings rising on every side, is like being in a city built by giants. For this new series, Anita Rani, Ade Adepitan and Ant Anstead take us behind the soaring facades to reveal how it all works, and their first stop is rush hour at Grand Central station. It’s the biggest railway terminal in the world, home to 46 platforms – Britain’s largest, Waterloo, has 19 – and further expansion is under way, deep beneath the surface.

Gardening Nightmares

8PM, ITV Ah, the great British garden – an island of calm in a sea of chaos, yes? Not in this new series, in which stunned householders reveal how their green spaces have been struck by disaster. In Kent, a rubbish site has grown to mountainous proportions, and the stink is overpowering. Elsewhere, turf thieves are operating.

One Of Us

9PM, BBC1 More from this brooding drama written by Harry and Jack Williams. The story focuses on families left reeling from a double murder, and part two opens on a dilemma – the prime suspect has been killed on their land, and police are at the door. What next? The superb Steve Evets plays one of the officers, with just a hint of Columbo.

Home From Home

10PM, BBC2 In a nicely detailed new comedy pilot, Johnny Vegas and Joanna Page play an ordinary couple who have fulfilled their dream of buying a holiday home in the Lake District. Unfortunately, their sons hate it, and dad soon becomes jealous of the rich neighbours, played by Adam James and a wonderfully bored and wistful Emilia Fox.
