PICK OF THE DAY
Ingenious Animals
8PM, BBC1 For this new, four-part series, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and a team of experts travel the world to observe wild animals behaving in surprising ways. Zoologist Lucy Cooke watches urban raccoons in Toronto as they work together to raid domestic rubbish bins. In Florida, Hugh has a close encounter with one of his childhood animal heroes, the manatee – which aren’t as slow and stupid as they may appear. The star, though, is an orphaned elephant calf, which helps Giles Clark to understand these creatures’ extraordinary emotional intelligence.
Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs
8.30PM, ITV Wild horses couldn’t keep Paul O’Grady out of the doghouse. Back at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for a new, eight-part series, Paul follows the stories of more pooches in need of new homes. As usual, he’s quick to make some four-legged friends with heart-wrenching as well as heart-warming tales.
A Week In The Wild
9PM, BBC2 Mexico’s awe-inspiring Copper Canyon is the location for this new celebrities-isolated-inthe-wilderness challenge. Spending a week hiking the canyon’s rugged trails are an eclectic bunch: former politician Stanley Johnson; presenter Melanie Sykes; and, lending his unique perspective, the comedian Henning Wehn.
Ellen
10PM, CH4 This gritty one-off drama features a powerful and involving performance from Jessica Barden as the bolshie teen of the title. Neglected by her mother, Ellen skips school and misbehaves in the London council estate where she lives, until a new friendship reignites her passion for life. Yet, despite her swagger, Ellen remains a vulnerable 14-year-old girl.
