Up Close And Personal
10.30AM, RADIO 4 (FM) The actor Clarke Peters, who was the best thing in the cult TV series The Wire, takes a look at the ‘close to the mic’ technique employed by the likes of Al Bowlly, Bing Crosby and others who made listeners feel that the singers were whispering, like a lover or a friend, in their ears.
The Bargain
2.30PM, RADIO 4 (FM) It’s 1988, and Mother Teresa is on a brief trip to London – and has a meeting with the bullying tycoon Robert Maxwell. Maxwell wants to give money to Mother Teresa’s charities, but, although she has ‘accepted money from all sorts of crooks’, she’s not keen on Maxwell’s dodgy dealings. This sharp, clever play follows their odd negotiations.
Zoe Ball
3PM, RADIO 2 Sarah Grace McLaughlin’s stage name, Bishop Briggs, comes from her Scottish parents’ home town of Bishopbriggs. The Barber Of Seville
6.30PM, RADIO 3 Rossini’s likeable, light-hearted opera comes live from the Royal Opera House.
