The Full Works Concert
8PM, CLASSIC FM Last night, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields – Classic FM’s artists in residence – under the baton of conductor Timothy Henty, gave a concert at the Royal Albert Hall for lucky Classic FM listeners. The Essay: Islands
10.45PM, RADIO 3 Rum is a diamond-shaped island of the Inner Hebrides, and a place of wild beauty. It is home to red deer, Highland cattle and herds of small ponies that have, according to local legend, descended from animals that swam ashore from a wrecked ship of the Spanish Armada. Poet Kenneth Steven looks at life on the island through the prism of poetry.
The People’s Songs
11PM, RADIO 2 Stuart Maconie is taking an appraising look at The Kinks’ Dedicated Follower Of Fashion in this continuing series, which looks at the history of modern Britain through 50 records. Ray Davies wrote the song after a heated argument with a fashion victim at a party in the Swinging Sixties. His attack on the ‘Carnabetian Army’ still seems, after all these years, funny and relevant.
