PICK OF THE DAY
Strictly Come Dancing
9PM, BBC1 It’s time for the first six of this year’s 15 celebrity contestants to make their debuts on the dance floor – the remaining nine premiere tomorrow. As ever, it’s a mixed bag, from the worlds of sport, TV, pop and politics, but who knows who will shine? The men in spandex are Greg Rutherford (right, with partner Natalie Lowe), Ed Balls, Will Young, Ore Oduba, Danny Mac, Judge Rinder and Melvin Odoom; the women in sequins are Daisy Lowe, Lesley Joseph, Naga Munchetty, Louise Redknapp, Anastacia, Laura Whitmore, Tameka Empson and Claudia Fragapane.
Jamie’s Family Super Foods
8PM, CH4 Jamie Oliver continues his mission to get us to eat well by championing foods he thinks are both super and delicious. Travelling the world to learn about the national dishes that keep the locals fighting fit, his first stops are Sardinia and South Korea, where he gets inspiration for healthy breakfast and lunch dishes.
Gardeners’ World
8.30PM, BBC2 Monty Don and the team host another hour-long programme full of tips on how to make your garden grow as well as how to control unruly or unwanted plants. Carol Klein explores edible roots, and meets the Nottinghamshire man hoping to grow the world’s biggest carrot, while Nick Macer finds an Atlantic rainforest in Ireland.
Joanna Lumley’s Japan
9PM, ITV Joanna concludes her Eastern odyssey by walking part of Shikoku’s pilgrimage trail; she learns of a Buddhist belief that we are reborn at the age of 62. She also visits Nagasaki, a city that has not forgotten the horror of the Second World War. The Japanese attitude to peace – and to ageing – is both touching and inspiring.
