7AM, BBC 6 MUSIC They’ve been working away over at 6 Music building a time machine, and they’re giving it a trial run today. Throughout the day, starting with Shaun Keaveny’s breakfast show, the station will be playing some great alternativ­e music from 1979. Listeners are invited to get in touch with the presenters to share their musical memories of 1979, via a newfangled piece of technology called ‘email’.

Waiting For The Boatman

11.15AM, RADIO 4 EXTRA Stephen Wakelam’s drama, first broadcast in 2012, stars former Doctor Who David Tennant as the painter Mario Minniti, who has travelled to Naples to seek out his old friend Caravaggio. But the great painter is nowhere to be found, forcing Mario to retrace Caravaggio’s last known movements, uncovering some surprises along the way. 11.30AM, RADIO 4 Last year, Deborah Frances-White gave a Radio 4 broadcast about her former life as a Jehovah’s Witness. Ryan, a young Canadian Jehovah’s Witness, listened to the broadcast in secret, then wrote to Deborah telling her about his desperate need to escape from the religion. Deborah dropped everything she was doing and flew to Canada to find Ryan. In this poignant, funny and thoughtful show, Deborah tells the story of Saving Brother Ryan.

Britain’s Black Past

1.45PM, RADIO 4 Nathaniel Wells was a cavalry officer, a High Sheriff and a wealthy landowner with a fine estate in Chepstow. He was also an absentee plantation owner, a slave owner – and black. In the last of this series, which has thrown much light on hidden history, Gretchen Gerzina tells Nathaniel’s story.

World On 3

11PM, RADIO 3 Jon Boden, who is the mainstay of the folk big band Bellowhead as well as fronting his own band, The Remnant Kings, joins Kathryn Tickell this evening. Jon will play a live studio session of folk music that’s heartfelt and has just the right amount of pop appeal.
