Nasser’s Eden
4PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA Alec McCowen plays the Prime Minister Anthony Eden in this drama set in 1956. Egypt’s President Nasser has nationalised the Suez canal, and British, French and Israeli troops have embarked on an illjudged mission to recapture the 120-mile canal that connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. This drama looks behind the politics to examine how the personalities of some of the key players had a profound effect on events.
Clare Teal
7PM, RADIO 2 The band Pink Martini join Clare in the studio. This ‘little orchestra’ started out in the 1990s in Portland, Oregon, and have been making great music ever since. The band’s multitalented musicians sing in many languages, and refuse to be tied down to any style of music. Their version of Abba’s Fernando, sung in the original Swedish, is a delight, but they also have plenty of original material. Lend them your ears this evening, and they’ll give your some quality entertainment.
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Classical Music
9PM, CLASSIC FM Sounding like vengeful spirits, the altos in Verdi’s Requiem give dire warnings of the Day of Wrath that’s coming our way. In Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, the orchestra plays the fearsome ‘death shriek’ and, in Mussorgsky’s A Night On The Bare Mountain, the entire brass section takes a turn for the demonic. Catherine Bott gets ready for Halloween with a look at classical music’s most spine-chilling moments.
