NEW! Frequency (Episode 6) In a successful TV series version of the film, an NYPD detective in 2016 finds she can talk to her dad over a ham radio – the twist being that he’s in 1996, and about to die while undercover. They start to work together, and the result is a moving and exciting piece of TV that has its heart exactly in the right place. A new episode arrives every Thursday.

NEW! Once Upon A Time (Season 6, Episode 7) Fairytale folk, including Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle), are robbed of their memories and relocated to an idyllic-looking town in this slick US drama. A new episode arrives every Wednesday.

DRAMA Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (Season 3) Eight recently added cases for the 1920s Australian sleuth, whose wit is as sharp as her wardrobe.

MOVIE The Big Short (2015) 15 Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling front this starry and offbeat dramatisation of the build-up to the recent financial crisis. Not as clever as Margin Call, but rewarding to watch.

AMAZON PRIME

DRAMA Bosch (Seasons 1-2) Amazon’s US crime drama is a well-plotted and lightly noirish affair, with Titus Welliver as the no-life cop of Michael Connelly’s novels. It’s less po-faced than it first appears, and there’s a third series coming in 2017.

DRAMA The Driver (All three episodes) An excellent cast, led by David Morrissey, powers this BBC drama about an unhappy cab driver (Morrissey) who takes on some shady work on the side. It comes from Danny Brocklehurst, writer of Ordinary Lies.

NEW! Red Oaks (Season 2) Amazon’s understated, 1980s-set comedy returns for a second season. The directionless young American at its centre (played by Britain’s Craig Roberts, near left) is in Paris, visiting his artistic girlfriend – which is going fine, until her parents turn up. And they aren’t at all impressed with him. From Friday.

MOVIE Room (2016) 15 A boy grows up knowing only ‘room’, a shed in which he and his mum (an Oscar-winning Brie Larson) are held against their will. A heart-in-the-mouth experience that takes a lot of emotional turns, but always feels honest.

SKY ON DEMAND/ NOW TV

DRAMA Scandal (Seasons 1-5) Rapid-fire drama about hypercompetent crisis manager Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington, right), who is having an affair with the US President. It’s addictive, even in its barmier later seasons.

COMEDY Bridget & Eamon (All six episodes) Irish series in which a couple and their ‘six to eight children’ get sucked into 1980s trends, such as aerobics and Tupperware. Their escapades swiftly escalate to insane degrees, but the attention to detail in the comedy always remains sharp.

LAST CHANCE The Walking Dead (Seasons 1-6) The seventh season is on Mondays at 9pm on Fox – so, if you’re in need of catching up with what came before, there’s just this week left to do it. Until Friday.

MOVIE The Muppets (2011) U There’s no cynicism at all in this joyful revival, in which the lovable creatures band together to save their theatre. Jason Segel and Amy Adams are the humans on their side.

BEST OF THE REST

NEW! The Power Of The Daleks (BBC Store) Six lost episodes of Doctor Who have been re-created, in animated form, by the team that did the same for a wiped episode of Dad’s Army.

The Power Of The Daleks was the first full story for Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. From today.

NEW! Breaking Into Prison (BBC3 via iPlayer) How and why is more contraband getting into British prisons? Livvy Haydock conducts an up-close investigation. From Monday, 10am.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) 12 (BT TV Store, Sky Store, Virgin) Superhero blockbuster that’s packed with almost too many characters, plots and grand action sequences. Jennifer Lawrence takes centre stage as the uncomfortable hero Mystique, marshalling the good mutants for the fight.

Now You See Me 2 (2016) 12 (BT TV Store, Sky Store, Virgin) Like Ocean’s Eleven but with magic, the flashy sequel finds the illusionists pitted against a crazy tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe). Both from Monday.
