Radio 3 In Concert

The organ at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, thundered into life at the beginning of the 17th century. It was rebuilt and restored in the 1930s, and restored again in the 1960s. The People’s Songs

11PM, RADIO 2

The British public seem to have a bit of a thing for novelty songs. In his continuing series on the story of modern Britain as told through 50 records, Stuart Maconie takes a closer look at that two-chord masterpiece, the Ying Tong Song. It was recorded by the Goons in the 1950s, but Harry Secombe was only allowed to speak the words, as he was under contract with another record company for his singing. Stuart listens to this piece of Goonery, along with some other comedy songs that have made it into the charts.

Dr John Cooper Clarke At The BBC

11PM, RADIO 4

Every man, according to the poet John Cooper Clarke, owns three Hawaiian shirts – none of which he should ever wear. If you wear one to a wedding, a fellow guest will ask you, ‘Why do you hate these people?’ Wear one to a funeral, and you’ll be thrown out on your ear. With this in mind, Clarke reads an ode tonight about getting rid of a Hawaiian shirt.
