Emma Slade was working for an investment bank when she was taken hostage in Jakarta. This traumatic event caused Emma to take stock of her life. She is now an ordained Buddhist nun who spends much of her time in the high Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Emma tells Clare Balding about her life this morning.

Jane Goodall was obsessed with wildlife from a very early age, and would even take earthworms and a healthy supply of mud to bed with her. Jane tells Michael Berkeley about her fascinatio­n for wildlife in this programme of memories and music. She also talks about her years of work – much of it difficult and very dangerous – travelling the world, protecting chimpanzee­s from extinction.

In 1889, Ludwig Koch, who was just eight years old, used a cumbersome phonograph to make the first known recording of birdsong. Ludwig, a musical prodigy, went on to become a highly regarded wildlife sound recordist. Tom Service plays some of Ludwig’s recordings in this programme, which looks at the connection between human music and birdsong.

Monteverdi’s Women

6.45PM, RADIO 3

The composer Monteverdi wrote music that showed the beauty and often the sensuality of women’s voices. One of the pieces he wrote, Arianna’s Lament, was performed by the singer Virginia Ramponi at a court wedding in 1608. It is a passionate piece, and for some of Monteverdi’s contempora­ries, having a woman sing such music verged on the blasphemou­s. Catherine Fletcher looks at the music Monteverdi wrote for Virginia and other women singers.
