CATCH-UP TV DRAMA
The Handmaid’s Tale ALL 4
This adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel really knows how to make its points and, while the result is not for the faint of heart, it’s refreshing to see a show that can balance intelligence and style with such skill. Last week, Serena Joy (the wife) made Offred (the Handmaid) a surprising proposition.
Hill Street Blues
ALL 4
Steven Bochco changed the US TV landscape when he created this raw, multistranded innercity police drama in 1981 – a feat he would repeat 12 years later with NYPD Blue (which is on iTunes). All seven seasons of Hill Street Blues are on All 4, but the first four are the best.
COMEDY
Count Arthur Strong BBC iPLAYER This great comedy delivered another delightfully silly episode last Friday, in which the semi-retired variety star makes an effort to build bridges with a face from the past.
Detectorists BBC iPLAYER
Series two of Mackenzie Crook’s gentle comedy about metal detectorists is full of small comic delights and poignant asides. It made its debut on BBC2 last week, and both series are also available to watch on Netflix.
DOCUMENTARY
The Week The Landlords Moved In BBC iPLAYER In an eye-opening series that should resonate with many who live in homes they don’t own, some of Britain’s most successful landlords – including self-made millionaire Paul – spend a week in one of their own rental properties to see how the other half lives. Horizon: Dawn Of The Driverless Car BBC iPLAYER The gases produced by our cars have poisoned the atmosphere, and around a million people a year are killed on the world’s roads. So, are ecologically friendly, computer-driven motors the answer to these problems? This thoughtprovoking Horizon asks if the reality of such vehicles can possibly live up to the dream. ENTERTAINMENT
