The Missing (Season 1)

This was appointment viewing on BBC1 in 2014. James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor play the parents whose world is torn apart when their son disappears.

The Night Manager (Season 1)

Hugh Laurie and Tom Hollander, as the baddie and his snarling lieutenant, take the acting honours in this John le Carre adaptation about a hotel night manager turned gang infiltrator. That hero role is filled by Tom Hiddleston – a part Laurie originally wanted to play when he first read the book, in the 1990s.

Preacher (Season 2, Episode 3)

American Gods is stylish, but it’s not nearly as eventful as this wry, violent comic-book adaptation starring Dominic Cooper (left), which feels like a spaghetti western. Here, the powerful preacher’s search for God takes him to New Orleans. A new episode arrives every Tuesday.

The Girl On The Train (2016) 15

Inevitably, this film disappointed some of the book’s fans – but, taken on its own terms, this is a good thriller, with a strong performance from Emily Blunt as the drunk who may be a killer. From Friday.

SKY ON DEMAND/ NOW TV

Elizabeth Debicki, right) to her home town in Tasmania, 15 years after her pal vanished. She doesn’t receive a warm welcome, and sees strange lights in the woods. Or is that the drink? Girls (Seasons 1-5) Lena Dunham’s raw, girls-about-New York City comedy has an admirable sense of honesty – or no sense of shame, depending on your perspective. Until tomorrow.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

A story by Philip K. Dick inspired this sci-fi romantic thriller, with Matt Damon as a lovestruck man whom shadowy forces conspire to keep away from Emily Blunt.

BEST OF THE REST
