Reds Fruity
101. 2017 Viña Santico, Merlot
CENTRAL VALLEY, CHILE (£5.95, thewinesociety.com)
I love genuinely juicy, fruit-driven merlot, and this one is definitely a stunner. There’s no oak or astringency, no tannin or unwanted tartness. All you get is plush, plump, ripe fruit – and we all love these tasting notes.
102. 2015 Gran Passo, Casa Santos Lima
ESTREMADURA, PORTUGAL (£7.99, new vintage reduced to £6.39 from 11 July7 August, Waitrose) A terrific wine, and at this price it’s so hard to impress that the effort is all the more laudable. The 2016, which arrives in July, is up to scratch too.
103. 2017 Corbello, Nero d’Avola/ Syrah
SICILY, ITALY (£7.99, reduced to £5.99 from 11 July-7 August, Waitrose) This is the red version of the amazing white and is every bit as generous in its fruit flavours. Nero d’Avola brings the plum and liquorice notes, while syrah brings spice and black fruit.
104. 2017 Nero d’Avola, Rupe Secca
SICILY, ITALY (£8.45, reduced to £7.45 each by the case, hhandc.co.uk, tel
020 7584 7927) Another stunningly impressive nero d’Avola that’s even more rounded and fruit-stuffed than Corbello. Ideal for barbecue food, this is a heady, lipsmacking wine.
105. 2017 Taste The Difference Zweigelt
NIEDERÖSTERREICH, AUSTRIA (£9, reduced to £8 until 3 July, Sainsbury’s)
This is super crunchy, like drinking cool, black cherries.
Chill this wine and choose it instead of a richer rosé as you revel in its skills.
106. 2017 Beaujolais
(£9, M&S)
£9 may seem a bit steep for a straightforward beaujolais, but this is anything but. Made by Paul Sapin, it’s a red berry-soaked wine with a seamless palate and a liquid-velvet finish. Chills perfectly for Indian dishes or crispy duck and handles any level of spice you wish.
107. 2016 Saumur, Les Nivières
LOIRE, FRANCE
(£9.49, Waitrose)
Made from cabernet franc, this lovely style of wine should be more popular. Offering great value for the calibre of fruit on display, the theme is blackberry juice with a minty or leafy tone, which adds a refreshing angle.
108. 2016 Coteaux Bourguignons, Henry Fessy
FRANCE (£9.50, M&S)
I love this wine and was surprised to find it’s made using solely the gamay grape as it has superb weight and grip on the palate. Although it’s in the juicy section of this collection, it boasts a lovely, earthy minerality, giving it amazing complexity.
110. 2017 Mas Bres, Pinot Noir
CÉVENNES, FRANCE (£11.10, reduced to
£9.88 each by the case, hhandc.co.uk, tel
020 7584 7927)
If you’re looking for an inexpensive pinot noir that tastes accurate and classy, look no further than this distinguished, rather raffish wine from the wilds of the Cévennes.
111. 2016 Morgon, La Chanaise, Dominique Piron
BEAUJOLAIS, FRANCE (£14.99, reduced to £11.99 until 10 July, Waitrose) At the top of my fruity list, this is not your average beaujolais. It has one foot in the medium-weight camp but is still a gamay, meaning the fruit is succulent, ripe and silky.
