Reds Medium weight
112. 2017 Domaine Ferrandière, Rouge Réserve
ETANG DE MARSEILLETTE, FRANCE (£4.99, Aldi) What’s happening here? A wine made by JeanClaude Mas which is merlotdominant, perfectly spicy and packaged beautifully but costs only a fiver? You must buy this.
113. 2016 Château Vieux Manoir
BORDEAUX, FRANCE (£6.99, Co-op) I have to hand it to the Co-op for finding an inexpensive claret that tastes as good as this one. Decant this wine and treat it like a more expensive bottle and it will repay you with superb fruit.
114. 2016 Entre Quintas Douro Reserva
PORTUGAL (£6.99, Lidl) I’m keen on Douro reds, but find many of them too tough, which takes away from their rich plum and black-cherry fruit. I prefer less-expensive ones like this – its velvety, spicy juiciness is excellent. A benchmark barbecue wine.
115. 2017 Taste The Difference Languedoc Grenache/Syrah/ Carignan
FRANCE
(£7, reduced to £6.25 from 4-24 July, Sainsbury’s) This is the red version of Sainsbury’s wistful white and it does the Côtes du Rhône thing at a budget price. A smooth wine with a lovely nose.
116. 2016 Grignanles-Adhémar, Delas
SOUTHERN RHÔNE, FRANCE (£7.50, thewinesociety.com)
A richer wine that packs a darker theme into its core, this would ordinarily be an autumnal style but I couldn’t leave it out as the price is so gobsmacking.
117. 2016 Torres, Sangre de Toro
CATALUNYA, SPAIN (£7.50, Tesco) Torres’s most famous red isn’t translated as ‘bull’s blood’ but ‘son of the bull’, inspired by Bacchus, god of wine. It captures the wilds of Catalunya and the price has barely moved in a decade.
118. 2016 Ventoux, Rémy Ferbras
RHÔNE, FRANCE (£7.99, Waitrose) I wasn’t prepared for the depth of fruit and power in this. Ventoux wines are on the same lines as other southern Rhône reds, so syrah and grenache play leading roles. Unusually, you can chill this for barbecue feasts.
119. 2016 Negroamaro
PUGLIA, ITALY (£8, M&S) This wine mixes red and black fruit perfectly. With touches of black olive and coffee beans, it captures the essence of southern Italy. Use this as a guide to which food you should whip up.
120. 2016 Negroamaro, Cantine de Falco
PUGLIA, ITALY (£8.95, reduced to £7.95 each by the case, leaandsandeman. co.uk) A second negroamaro, with flavours even more accentuated – the nose is floral and berry-soaked and the palate heady. A crazy price for the calibre of the wine.
121. 2016 Montes, Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon
CENTRAL VALLEY, CHILE (£8.99, Co-op) This is a mint and blackcurrant leaf cocktail of a wine, and it’s on the succulent side so it doesn’t need decanting before you drink it. Perfect with lamb, this is a treat with Sunday lunch or a juicy steak.
122. 2016 Domaine Sainte Rose, La Garrigue
PAYS D’OC, FRANCE (£9.99, reduced to £8.99 each on a mix six deal, Majestic) Made from the classic blend of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre, this wine is velvety and smooth. But it’s the spicy herb and liquorice notes which make it so compelling.
123. 2015 Château Tour de Gilet, Bordeaux Supérieur
FRANCE (£10.99, reduced to £8.99 until 10 July, Waitrose) A surprisingly good claret with a fighting price, and it looks great in the glass – no surprise because it comes from the superb 2015 vintage. It will age well too.
124. 2016 Col di Sasso, Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon
TUSCANY, ITALY
(£11.99, thewinechambers. co.uk) With black fruit, leather and cinnamon notes, this fascinating wine uses the French grape cabernet to bolster the local sangiovese.
125. 2015 Valderroa, Mencía, Valdesil
VALDEORRAS, SPAIN (£12.25, Booths) Mencía grapes are fascinating, with a a gorgeous perfume. This wine is a perfect example of why I’m tipping this grape for stardom. The value afforded here is incredible.
126. 2016 Côte Mas Pézenas
LANGUEDOC, FRANCE (£12.99, reduced to £10.99 each on a mix six deal, Majestic) Using syrah, grenache, carignan, mourvèdre and cinsault grapes, this is a hugely impressive wine destined to be drunk with the best cuts of steak or lamb chops. Majestic)
127. 2017 Bourgueil, Cuvée Déchainée, Lamé Delisle, Boucard
LOIRE, FRANCE (£12.99, reduced to £10.99 each on a mix six deal,
An elite version of a Loire cabernet franc (see Les Nivières), I adore the density of the fruit and its pure expression of its region.
128. 2012 Château Lamothe-Bergeron, Haut-Médoc
BORDEAUX, FRANCE (£13.99, Co-op) Moving up the red Bordeaux ladder, this is a slightly older vintage as these wines need time to mellow before drinking. At six years old this is approaching its peak.
129. 2015 Savignyles-Beaune, Domaine JeanJacques Girard
BURGUNDY, FRANCE (£19.99, Co-op) This is 20 quid, but it’s a great vintage from a highly respected winemaker in a lovely village. The combination of these makes for a very attractive pinot noir.
