Rich and bold
134. 2016 Oxford Landing Estates, Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz
SOUTH AUSTRALIA (£6.69, Waitrose) My favourite Aussie red blend involves sleek cassis tones of cabernet sauvignon with the spice and power of shiraz. Oxford Landing’s entry level wine is a stormer!
135. 2017 Burra Brook, Shiraz
SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA (£7, M&S) Made by the talented Sam Wigan at Yalumba winery, it’s a juicy, plummy wine that can tackle all main courses. The secret ingredient is 4% tempranillo!
136. 2016 Côtes du Ventoux, Delas
RHÔNE, FRANCE (£7.49, Co-op) Yet another bargain Rhône red. Ventoux wines are the least expensive, which is why we can get rich, powerful, spicy wines made with this degree of flair.
137. 2016 Irresistible Fairtrade Malbec
FAMATINA VALLEY, ARGENTINA (£7.49, Co-op) This malbec has a bizarre chocolate and prune note, which is very appealing. And it’s Fairtrade too.
138. 2016 Morrisons The Best Gran Montaña Malbec
MENDOZA, ARGENTINA (£7.50, Morrisons) A stunning wine with coffee bean and black fruit juice in every sip. It has a richness rarely found at this price.
139. 2017 Berton Vineyards, The Black Shiraz
SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA (£7.99, Co-op) The name gives away the colour of this wine and hints at the flavour. Big, powerful and utterly delicious, it’s so impressive.
140. 2016 Honoro Vera, Garnacha
CALATAYUD, SPAIN (£7.99, Co-op) This is made in a rioja style and it’s amazingly fruity and dense. If you decant it before drinking, you will be able to marvel at the perfume too.
141. 2012 Biferno Rosso, Riserva
PALLADINO, ITALY (£8, Booths) With beautiful mellow, mature tones, the perfume of wild herbs, liquorice, leather and cherries is sensational.
142. 2017 Beefsteak Club, Old Vines Tempranillo
TOLEDO, SPAIN (£8.99, reduced to £6.49 until 10 July, Waitrose) A budget-priced rioja-style wine with little oak and masses more fruit! It has an Iberian earthiness, hence why I like it.
143. 2016 Viñalba, Finca La 70 Malbec/ Cabernet Sauvignon
PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA (£8.99, Co-op) This is big and structured so decant it first. Half of it is aged in French oak barrels for a year, giving it a tantalising ‘seasoning’.
144. 2015 Alto Rouge
STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA (£9.50, reduced to £8 until 1 July, Morrisons) Made from cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot, it has dense black fruit. With oak, too, it’s heady and impressive.
145. 2017 KWV, Earth’s Essence Shiraz
SWARTLAND, SOUTH AFRICA (£9.99, Ocado) An odd wine with ambition. With rooibos and honeybush extracts, aromatic elements add to its flavour.
146. 2016 The Cubist, Garnacha
CALATAYUD, SPAIN (£9.99, Waitrose) The Cubist is a turbo version of the Honoro Verastyle (see far left) and it’s a massively exciting, rich red. The 2017 vintage arrives in autumn, and you can move on to that with confidence when this sells out.
147. 2015 Jim Barry, The Lodge Hill Shiraz
CLARE VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (£10, Tesco) Coming from a vineyard in Clare, this is a dense, dark, spicy red made from first-class fruit with real pride.
148. 2016 Wolf Blass, Silver Label Shiraz/Cabernet/ Malbec
SOUTH AUSTRALIA (£10, reduced to £9 until 9 July, Tesco) Powerful and aromatic on the palate, this fine wine is just starting on a five or six-year life.
149. 2014 Sette Muri, Brindisi Riserva
PUGLIA, ITALY (£10, Tesco) With powerful fruit and an inky colour, it’s made from negroamaro but errs on the menacing side of it.
150. 2016 Cattle Baron, Zinfandel
LODI, CALIFORNIA (£10, reduced to £8 until
31 July, Booths) Made from ripe blueberry and plum-soaked fruit, seemingly spiked with cinnamon and Christmas spices, this is exciting and tailor-made for elite burgers and hot dogs, given its origins.
151. 2014 Wirra Wirra, Church Block
MCLAREN VALE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (£10.49, Co-op) I’m a huge fan of Church Block. Made from cabernet, shiraz and merlot, this one is a truly iconic Aussie wine – see for yourself.
152. 2011 Salice Salentino Riserva, Cantine Paolo Leo
PUGLIA, ITALY (£10.95, jeroboams.co.uk) Deep, dark, powerful and brooding, this is a mesmerising wine which shows no signs of slowing down.
153. 2016 Robert Oatley, Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon
MARGARET RIVER, WESTERN AUSTRALIA (£10.99, Co-op) A highly impressive wine by a great company.
154. 2015 Cahors, Les Bouysses, Malbec
SOUTH-WEST FRANCE (£12, reduced to £11 from 4-24 July, Sainsbury’s) Compared to regular Cahors, this French malbec is a smooth and genial wine. Plummy and powerful, but polished and proud, it tastes really stunning with sticky pork ribs.
155. 2014 Skillogalee, Shiraz
CLARE VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (£14.99, Co-op) Skilly, as this estate is known, makes dark, brooding shiraz with the most alluring velvety texture. It’s lovely on the nose, and long on the finish.
156. 2015 Tesco finest* Amarone
VENETO, ITALY (£18, reduced to £14.40 from 10-30 July, Tesco) Made from partially dried grapes, the concentrated flavour is raisiny but bone-dry wine. Drink it with cheese or meaty feasts.
157. 2016 Châteauneuf-duPape, Les Sinards, Famille Perrin
SOUTHERN RHÔNE, FRANCE (£19.99, Co-op) It’s a big chap, but classy – and worth every penny.
