1 Nicola Walker and I play DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunny Khan [pictured], who investigat­e historical murders. We have a laugh on set. Laughter helped me cope with bullies at school and now it means I don’t take emotional scenes home.

My wife Meera Syal and I fight over Nicola. Meera was in The Split with her but as I knew her first, I think she’s more my friend. I loved to hear Meera talking about her when they were filming, and Meera is now more interested in my day.

A surprising star of the show is Sunny’s backpack. It’s a fan hit – people speculate about what’s in it on social media. The props department fills it with random things; a pineapple, leopard-print stilettos. I never know.

In the last series, when Sunny tried to kiss

Cassie, I thought it was so wrong I talked to the writer Chris Lang about it. He said he was just playing with the cliché of a male and female cop getting together, and that these two definitely wouldn’t. Thankfully they’ve moved on in the new series.

We got all six scripts at once for this series and I stayed up into the early hours reading them like a novella. I can never work out whodunnit until the end!
