MATTHEW JUKES’ WINE LIST
A delectable dry riesling duo and two stunning rosés for you this week
1
2017 Pfaffl, Neubern Riesling, Niederösterreich, Austria
£8.99, Lidl
There are beguiling rhubarb stalk notes in this charming riesling and it’s a great example of an Austrian dry riesling – a style which we’re falling for now that palates are tiring of inexpensive sauvignon blanc.
2
2017 Elephant In The Room, Stupendous Shiraz, Langhorne Creek, South Australia
£13.99, reduced to £10.99 each on a mix six deal, Majestic
This is a WIGIG (when it’s gone it’s gone) wine so find some bottles quick. It’s a big, bold and delicious shiraz made by the brilliant Corey Ryan.
3
2017 Zapallares, Apaltagua, Reserva Riesling, Casablanca Valley, Chile
£9.95, reduced to £7.50 until 15 September, davywine.co.uk
This riesling has spent three months on its lees (fine sediment particles), which results in a bonedry wine with edgy citrus and pineapple fruit notes.
4
2017 MâconLugny, Les Charmes, Maison Deux-Fleurs, Burgundy, France
£11.95, fromvineyards direct.com
While most white Burgundies are moving out of reach in terms of price, this worthy fellow is not only less than £12 but authentic, toned, aromatic and lipsmacking on the finish.
5
2017 Vaglio Rosé, Mendoza, Argentina
£10, reduced to £6.67 until 3 September, M&S Made by José Lovaglio – son of Susana Balbo, whose wines I’ve included in this column regularly – this rosé blends malbec with pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and torrontés. It’s fascinating, with watermelon and herbal touches. Adorable!
