ON SCREEN: Time-travelling romances

-

As the ambitious new children’s adventure Find Me In Paris gets under way (6.30pm, Nickelodeon), we take a look at that and other decade-hopping love stories on film and TV…

Somewhere In Time (1980) A playwright (Christopher Reeve) is obsessed with an actress from 1912 (Jane Seymour), and uses hypnosis to skip back and romance her in a mildly queasy tale. The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009) Eric Bana stars as a librarian who jumps about in time, building a relationship with Clare (Rachel McAdams, left, with Bana). McAdams is also the partner to a time- travelling man in Midnight In

Paris (2011) and About Time (2013), but hasn’t once got to timetravel herself (‘I’m kind of bitter about that’). You can watch About Time on Netflix,

while The Time Traveler’s Wife is on Amazon Prime.

Outlander (2014-present) Epic series following a married Second World War nurse (Caitriona Balfe, below) to 1740s Scotland, where she falls in love with a hunky but sensitive Highlander. Seasons one to three are on Amazon Prime, where season four is due in November.

Find Me In Paris (2018) Unusually grand children’s series in which a ballet-loving Russian princess accidentally jumps from the Paris of 1905 to 2018, leaving her boyfriend wondering what on Earth happened.

When We First Met (2018) Netflix’s Groundhog Day-style romcom has a man-child reliving one day over and over, trying to turn his female friend into something more.
