A strapping shiraz, a floral fiano and a sparkler that really hits the spot are among the world- class tipples this week
1
2017 The Listening Station, Malbec, Victoria, Australia
£7.75, Booths
A terrific wine, this ebullient Aussie red takes the famous malbec grape and gives it a welcome twist of gentility and succulence. Half of the wine is aged in oak barrels for extra class. It’s a delicious partner to Jamie Oliver’s Spiced Slowcooked Lamb Shanks recipe.
3
2017 Picpoul de Pinet, LanguedocRoussillon, France
£10, Marks & Spencer
This is my favourite picpoul of the moment, and it captures perfectly the freshness, vitality and sea-spray tang of this famous style of white wine. Serve it with John Torode’s Phat Thai and you really will have a match made in heaven.
5
NV Blanquette de Limoux, Méthode Ancestrale, Antech, South of France
£10.50, thewinesociety.com It’s so difficult to find truly delicious, off-dry sparkling wine, but this hits the mark, with generous fruitiness and also cleansing acidity on the finish. Sensational.
2
2017 Le Grand Ballon, Sauvignon Blanc, Thierry Delaunay, Loire, France
£8.99, reduced to £7.99 until Tuesday, Waitrose
With sauvignon blanc, my palate always leads me back to the Loire. This crisp, citrus-kissed wine is perfect with Jean-Christophe Novelli’s Minute Scallops With Endive And Blue Cheese.

2016 Kratos, Fiano, Luigi Maffini, Campania, Italy
£18.95, or £16.95 each by the case, leaandsandeman.co.uk Made from organically grown fiano grapes, this has a floral quince and peach nose and a mineral finish. It’s made for Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s Roast Squash And Chickpeas With Spicy Apricot Sauce.
