A terrific wine, this ebullient Aussie red takes the famous malbec grape and gives it a welcome twist of gentility and succulence. Half of the wine is aged in oak barrels for extra class. It’s a delicious partner to Jamie Oliver’s Spiced Slowcooked Lamb Shanks recipe.

This is my favourite picpoul of the moment, and it captures perfectly the freshness, vitality and sea-spray tang of this famous style of white wine. Serve it with John Torode’s Phat Thai and you really will have a match made in heaven.

£10.50, thewinesociety.com It’s so difficult to find truly delicious, off-dry sparkling wine, but this hits the mark, with generous fruitiness and also cleansing acidity on the finish. Sensational.

With sauvignon blanc, my palate always leads me back to the Loire. This crisp, citrus-kissed wine is perfect with Jean-Christophe Novelli’s Minute Scallops With Endive And Blue Cheese.
