New spy drama Condor (9pm, Universal) is inspired by the novel Six Days Of The Condor. Here, we take a look at some other current and upcoming book-to-TV adaptations…

Outlander (2014-present)

As in the romantic, time-hopping page-turners by Diana Gabaldon, the TV series follows a Second World War nurse to the divided Scotland of the 1740s. It’s picked up a loyal audience on More4, and season four starts on Amazon on November 5.

Jack Ryan (2018) Like Max Irons’s character in Condor, the Ryan of Tom Clancy’s books is an analyst who is dropped in at the deep end. In this slick, punchy Amazon series, he’s played by John Krasinski.

War Of The Worlds (later in 2018)

The BBC1 version of the H.G. Wells novel is the first British adaptation of the tale, and follows a couple (Rafe Spall and Eleanor Tomlinson) as they flee a Martian invasion in Edwardian England.

His Dark Materials (2019)

Directed by

Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) and starring Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy, this BBC1 project, based on Philip Pullman’s fantasy books, promises great things. Les Miserables (2019) Dominic West, Olivia Colman (left) and David Oyelowo all feature in Andrew Davies’s talentpacked take on Victor Hugo’s tale of 19th-century France for BBC1.

This Is Going To Hurt (2019)

A very different proposition to the others, this BBC2 drama is based on comedian Adam Kay’s searing memoir of his time as an NHS junior doctor. Kay is adapting it himself.
