Penny Gore introduces a recording of the Russian composer Anton Rubinstein’s steamy opera The Demon, which was composed in 1871 and based on the poem by Mikhail Lermontov. It had its world premiere earlier this year at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, starring the Latvian bass-baritone Egils Silins in the title role as a fallen angel who seeks redemption through a woman’s love.
