THE BEST TV LISTINGS

- Matthew Rhys DEATH AND NIGHTINGALES

Make sure you don’t miss a thing with our 52-page guide, including Jaci Stephen’s Soap Watch and a special preview of twisting thriller The Sinner

1 The action in our drama is set in 19th-century Ireland and as a Welshman I struggled with the accent – if you’re Irish you’ll think I travel around Ireland with it. It’s meant to be from Fermanagh, where the show is set, but it’s probably more Belfast. When I was tired I had no idea how I should sound.

2 No one could take their eyes off Jamie Dornan – I certainly couldn’t. I’m only human. I’m staggered by his calves, he has calves that a farmer would be proud of. And physically he is intimidating. He’s perfect for the character of Liam Ward, who incites my stepdaughter Beth to leave me.

3 One of the ways the cast relaxed between shots was a game called Potato On The

Roof. You throw a potato onto a pitched roof and have to catch it when it rolls off – the trick is working out where it’ll fall from. Jamie says it’s an ancient Northern Irish game, but I’m not sure.

4 I had to grow a beard and moustache to play my character, Billy (pictured). My family [he has a son with his The Americans co-star, Keri Russell] were not enamoured with it. They said I should either buy a Harley-Davidson motorbike or join Emmerdale.

5 I live and mainly work in America but I loved being back in Britain. My family and I stayed in Belfast for a week before filming started and it was incredible. I love the craic and miss British irreverence.
