Radio 3 In Concert: Silent Night 7.30PM, RADIO 3
On Christmas Eve in 1914, the guns stopped briefly for an unauthorised ceasefire. Over the battlefields came the sound of Allied and German frontline troops singing carols to each other. The Full Works Concert 8PM, CLASSIC FM
Classic FM brings us an American Christmas this evening with a concert given by the Boston Pops Orchestra. The Orchestra plays old and new Christmas music, featuring lots of lush arrangements and plenty of chances to sing along. The concert opens with a joyful rendition of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and includes that lovely gallop of a seasonal song, Sleigh Ride. Rudolph The RedNosed Reindeer is also on the bill, and the concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s Winter Dreams.
The Radio 2 Rock Show 9PM, RADIO 2
The pioneering rock band Led Zeppelin is 50 years old. Who’d have thought it? John Bonham, the fastest drummer in the west, died on the rocky road of rock back in 1980, but Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones survive. This show celebrates the band’s music, and includes tributes from Brian May, Roger Daltrey and other fans of Led Zeppelin’s big, full-on approach to their music. SJ
