Andrew Davies’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic certainly looks good, but it’s bleak stuff (well, the clue is in the title). In part three, a tormented Valjean (Dominic West) is forced by Javert (David Oyelowo) to reveal his true identity, but a promise to Fantine (Lily Collins) changes everything.
