Before the ninth series begins tomorrow at 8pm on ITV, here’s the first-ever case for Brenda Blethyn (left) as Ann Cleeves’s detective.

The series came about in a pleasingly unorthodox way. Elaine Collins, who later became a producer on the series, picked up one of Cleeves’s novels in a charity shop purely by chance.
