IN HER OWN WORDS:

Currently starring in Cleaning Up (9pm, ITV), Sheridan, 37, is a multitalented actor and singer who has had plenty to say about her life and career…

- Sheridan Smith

On why she became an actor: ‘I’m no good at anything else. I’m quite thick, you see, although Mum will kill me for saying that – she’s always saying, “You’re not! You did your GCSEs!”’

On the self-doubt she feels about her ability after not going to drama school: ‘When I’m working alongside someone like Maggie Smith, I can’t help thinking, “I don’t deserve to be here.” You see these formally trained actors with scripts covered in writing, whereas mine will be covered in coffee stains and fag burns.’

On her plans to start a family – Sheridan got engaged in May last year: ‘When a woman gets to 30, you ask her about having kids. I don’t mind — all my friends are settled with kids, so I can understand people asking, and I even get it from relatives, but I’d be a fool to miss these work opportunities. And there’s no time limit.’

On her struggle with mental health problems: ‘There’s a stigma against it, and it really does my head in, because the words “mental health” make people panic and think, “Oh, I can’t say that I suffer with that,” but I do, and I’m happy to say that now. You just have to ask for help, that’s the thing — and not feel ashamed, because it’s an illness like any other.’

On her love of animals: ‘I’m animalmad, so my ideal date would probably be something involving going to see animals.’
