With the Royal Albert Hall playing host to the biggest night in British cinema tonight (9pm, BBC1), we look at some figures in relation to the prestigious ceremony...

2 The number of years in film that were covered by the very first awards ceremony, held in May of 1949. Odd Man Out was named Best British Picture of 1947, with The Fallen Idol taking the gong for 1948. The original trophies were designed by artist Henry Moore.

The Rising Star Award has been given since 2006; the first to be so honoured was James McAvoy. Other notable winners include
