To play DI Rachel Carey in this conspiracy thriller I shadowed real police. I got so into it that a few days before we started filming, our director Ben Chanan called me and was miffed when I told him, ‘I’ve got to go, I’m in the office.’ I’ve stayed in touch with my police pals and I’m still hoping to work out who did one of the murders they were working on.

2 For one incredible scene in which Rachel questions her life decisions, we did a night shoot at the top of The Shard. It was my first time up there and we had the place to ourselves throughout the night. Some of us got headaches, possibly because of the altitude.

A specialist cameraman, who worked on Spooks, spent six months setting up cameras across London to record everyday life happening on the streets, which is in the show as CCTV footage. We

weren’t allowed inside the real Counter Terrorism Unit, but people who’ve worked there say our version looks really genuine.

I worked with Callum Turner, who plays Shaun Emery, the former soldier Rachel is investigating, on The Borgias series in 2013. Callum is now as obsessed with the Army as I am with the police, and a brutal workout schedule to make him look like a soldier means he appears very different – even he admits he doesn’t always recognise himself.

The subject matter of the show, surveillance, triggered a lot of discussions between us all on set, particularly as it was in the news as we filmed. It’s made me more aware of what’s going on – I notice CCTV cameras. It’s one reason I’m not on social media and I can’t bring myself to have an Amazon Alexa in the house.
