MY LIVING WORLD
6.35AM, RADIO 4 ★★★
The mournful call of stone curlews – also known as dikkops or thick-knees – almost died out in Britain. In this programme, chosen from the Living World archive, we hear of a conservation project to bring these birds back from the brink of extinction.
THE MICHAEL BALL SHOW
11AM, RADIO 2 ★★★★
Michael Ball welcomes Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark into the studio today. The electronic group formed in Merseyside in 1978, broke up in 1996, and then re-formed in 2006. They have just released a box set that includes a collection of 22 previously unreleased tracks, and they will be telling Michael all about it. Sandi Toksvig is also on the show to report on the new theatrical and dining experience that is Mamma Mia! The Party – it’s been a big hit in Stockholm, and Sandi adapted the script for the London show.
BARRY MANILOW: THEY WRITE THE SONGS
9PM, RADIO 2 ★★★★
In the fourth of his series on songwriters, Barry Manilow looks at Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s odd but successful working method. Bernie sends his poems off to Elton, who then comes up with the tune. It’s a system that has worked brilliantly for decades, as we’ll hear when Barry takes a songwriter’s view of their work, then plays some great John/taupin hits.
