POD TO SCREEN: Shows based on podcasts

-

Today, Limetown – about fictional disappearances in Tennessee – arrives as a TV drama, starring Jessica Biel, on Facebook Watch. Here are some other transfers…

The Ricky Gervais Show (2010-12) The podcast of Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington’s radio show set records as the world’s most downloaded in 2007, and was adapted into an animated series by HBO in the US. 11pm, Comedy Central. Homecoming (2018-present) The original audio drama was a conspiracy thriller about a therapist at a shady facility for rehabilitating soldiers, and was fairly starry for a podcast – among the cast were David Schwimmer and Oscar Isaac. Amazon’s TV series stars Julia Roberts (centre) as the therapist; it will be back for season two, but without Roberts. On Amazon Prime.

Dirty John (2019-present) The audio series presented this true-life US story of online dating gone very wrong as a narrated string of interviews. The TV show is a straight drama starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana, and a second season – following a different case, and led by Amanda Peet and Christian Slater – is in the pipeline. On Netflix. Modern Love (2019-present) Amazon loves adapting podcasts. In addition to Homecoming and the horror series Lore, they’ve also made Modern Love, based on a New York Times podcast. It’s an anthology of real-life love tales, and stars

Tina Fey, Anne Hathaway and Dev Patel. From Friday, Amazon Prime.
