MAKE ME A PROGRAMME
11AM, RADIO 4 ★★★
Artificial intelligence killed the radio star. Georgia Lewis-anderson anticipates a future in which AI could create a radio programme reflecting all your views, playing your favourite music and eliminating anything likely to give you the hump. All these items will be presented by an Alexa-type DJ, talking in an accent designed just for your ears. Is this a good idea?
BRIEF LIVES
2.15PM, RADIO 4 ★★★★★ Frank Twist (David Schofield) spends much of his working life trying to keep the good, the bad and the guilty out of jail, so he’s irked to find himself appearing in court as a witness for the prosecution. Another cracking episode of the legal drama.
BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARDS
7.30PM, RADIO 2 ★★★★★ Mark Radcliffe does the honours for this big annual celebration of folk, roots, traditional and acoustic music. From small beginnings, this event has grown into a major bash; it comes this year from Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and features the duo O’hooley & Tidow – with their rollicking theme tune from Gentleman Jack – as well as the traditional Irish band Dervish, the influential blues guitarist Wizz Jones, duo Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita and the roots, reggae and folk band Edward II.
THE FULL WORKS CONCERT
8PM, CLASSIC FM ★★★★ Michael Barenboim, the younger son of the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim and the pianist Elena Bashkirova, is a fine musician in his own right. In this broadcast – part of
Classic FM’S Live Music Month – Michael will be performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 1 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of the exuberant Venezuelan-spanish conductor Gustavo Dudamel. SJ
