CV: Dev Patel
Dev, 29, has an impressive range – from comedy to action and drama – and is one of the stars of romantic anthology Modern Love (Amazon Prime). We look at his career so far…
● Dev showed great promise in drama at school, and landed a role in E4 hit Skins in 2006 while still doing his GCSES. He admits to having been a hyperactive teen, and channelled this into acting as well as martial arts.
● His second role, in Danny Boyle’s Oscarwinning Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, brought him international attention. The director cast Dev on the advice of his teenage daughter, a fan of Skins.
● He bounced back from flop The Last Airbender (2010) with another big hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), and its 2015 sequel.
● In sci-fi Chappie (2015), he played a tech whizz who built sentient robots, and in The Man Who Knew Infinity, he played real-life mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
● For his performance in powerful fact-based drama Lion (2016), he was nominated for an Oscar and won a Bafta. In 2018, he returned to India yet again for Hotel Mumbai, about the 2008 terror attack on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which is available on Sky On Demand.
● Coming soon: The Personal History Of David Copperfield, in which he plays the title role in Armando Iannucci’s reimagining of the Dickens classic (in cinemas early next year), and Green Knight, a medieval fantasy in which Dev stars as knight Sir Gawain.
