CALL THE MIDWIFE

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★

The death of Winston Churchill in 1965 marks the start of this new series as the Poplar slum clearance continues and squalid living conditions improve for some, while others are rushed to hospital when a deadly and highly contagious infection rears its ugly head. Fred finds a baby abandoned in a dustbin, and nurse Trixie and Mother Mildred (Helen George and Miriam Margolyes, right) rush to find her desperate mother. And, as the wrecking ball tears through east London, could Nonnatus House itself be under threat?

DANCING ON ICE

6PM, ITV ★★★★

After a shaky start during the Christmas special, the 12 celebrities will be feeling a bit more confident now they’ve had the chance to train with their professional skating partners. Tonight, as the contest proper gets under way, the first six couples take to the ice with their first routines. Will there be an early favourite?

THE TRIAL OF CHRISTINE KEELER 9PM, BBC1

★★★★ Life is tough for Christine, and the prospect of earning some cash by selling her story – an idea suggested by one of the many men who surround her – is too hard to resist. Stephen, meanwhile, is finding damage limitation difficult to manage, and a bomb is about to drop on the Secretary of State for War, John Profumo (Ben Miles).

SAS: WHO DARES WINS

9PM, CH4 ★★★★

Ant Middleton is back to put a new batch of recruits through their paces, with an inside man placed among the 25 candidates as a mole. It starts with a shock and a jump from a moving speedboat into the freezing Atlantic Ocean, before they swim to their Scottish island base. Rather them than us. SA
