MIDSOMER MURDERS

8.30PM, ITV ★★★★

Break out the Horlicks, for the cosiest of cosy crime dramas has returned – with a killing at a wedding. There are many guests and thus many lines of enquiry for DCI Barnaby and DS Winter and (Neil Dudgeon and Nick Hendrix) to pursue, and the web widens further once they learn the murdered bride (Kelly Brook, right, with Dudgeon and Hendrix) was a reviled radio talk show host. During the investigation, we learn a surprising nugget about the racy Las Vegas days of Dr Perkins (Annette Badland). Some flashbacks to that would be fun…

FATHER BROWN

2.15PM, BBC1 ★★★

Fans of cosy crime are wellserved today. On top of a new Midsomer, there’s a new daily series with sleuthing priest Father Brown (Mark Williams), opening with the ultimate in quaint plots for a village mystery – the sabotage of a choir contest, the winner of which will have a chance to perform in front of the Queen.

THE CHOIR: AYLESBURY PRISON

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★ Gareth Malone tries to bring the healing power of singing to Aylesbury Young Offenders Institute in a two-parter that ends tomorrow. As a group, the prisoners are loud and macho, but when he talks to them individually, Gareth finds some receptive – and the first rehearsal brings hope to an immensely daunting project.

24 HOURS IN POLICE CUSTODY

9PM, CH4 ★★★★ This eye-opening two parter follows the real-life investigation into the murder of a young man. It starts one January morning, when a dog-walker finds a body in Hinchingbrooke Country Park in Cambridgeshire, and police suspect that an execution has taken place. Concludes tomorrow.
