THE NORTH YORK MOORS: A WILD YEAR

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

The third and final area to be explored over the changing seasons is the North York Moors in the north of England. The dales have been shaped by the elements, while the uplands – home to red grouse (right), only to be found in Britain – are gloriously clad in billions of heather blooms. Emperor moths are found aplenty in the growth, while bees populate the land in summer. Don’t miss the wondrous tour of Rosedale, where fast streams have cut into the limestone to create amazing, steep-sided valleys.

GARDENERS’ WORLD

8PM, BBC2 ★★★★ Hydrangeas are a sure way to make your garden look more showy and, despite being easy to grow, Adam Frost has top tips on how to care for them. You can also see this beautiful plant in full glory with a repeat of Carol Klein’s visit to Darley Park in Derby. We also meet a professor of biology, who has built a garden for insects.

JACK WHITEHALL’S SPORTING NATION

8.30PM, BBC1 ★★★

Talent isn’t everything, and the British public can make sports stars into national heroes – and bring them straight back down to earth again. From David Beckham’s prowess on the pitch to Andy Murray’s uneasy ride to the top, Jack looks at how we treat some of our sporting greats.

A GREEK ODYSSEY WITH BETTANY HUGHES

9PM, CH5 ★★★★

Sadly, the historian’s 1,700mile trip is coming to an end – and she gets her own royal welcome after arriving at Corfu, Odysseus’s last stop before home. She visits Prince Philip’s birthplace, takes part in a cricket match, and puts some archers to the test on the idyllic island of Ithaca. TJ

REEF BREAK

9PM, ALIBI ★★★ This show is set in a US coastal town, but it’s actually filmed in Australia, which partly explains the slightly otherworldly feel. The other part of that explanation is that extreme things happen all the time – here, a flight from Hawaii is hijacked, and local surfer Cat (Aussie-born Poppy Montgomery, left) leaps into action.

CODE 37

9PM, MORE4 ★★★ Hannah’s team of miscreants in the vice squad – Bob, Kevin and the permanently smoking Charles (Marc Lauwrys, left) – must be the most politically incorrect bunch in the business. Mind you, Hannah isn’t exactly conventional either, and neither is her boss, who takes an unusual interest in a case tonight.

NCIS: NEW ORLEANS

9PM, FOX ★★★

Pride (Scott Bakula, left) is often called back to the field from his ivory tower, and it’s become a running joke of this show. That happens again at the start of this new, sixth season as a Navy bomb goes missing – but this time, for once, he doesn’t look so pleased to be back.
