THE ALIEN BIRDS HAVE LANDED

11.45AM, RADIO 4 (FM) HHH Ruddy ducks were introduced into Britain from North America in 1948 by the naturalist Peter Scott. It wasn’t Scott’s greatest idea – these stout, aggressive birds took to Britain’s rivers and lakes like proverbial ducks to water. Soon, the ruddy ducks were seen as pests, and they have been shot to near extinction here. Alison Steadman compares the fate of this North American arrival with that of the Canada goose, which has been able to make itself very much at home on these shores.

Aviva Dautch spent her childhood in a home that was so full of random items that she often had to sleep in the bath, and, when her mother died, Aviva had to clear tonnes of rubbish from the house. In this programme, Aviva recalls the chaos she grew up in, and wonders how others living in similar circumstan­ces have coped with lockdown.

7PM, RADIO 2 HHHH Ken Bruce presents a concert of guitar music – given by jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, folk guitarist Martin Simpson and classical guitarist Milos Karadaglic – which includes the hit Apache by The Shadows, plus Rodrigo’s gorgeous evocation of Spain, Concierto de Aranjuez. SJ
