US

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ This funny and insightful fourpart drama is an adaptation of the 2014 novel by One Day writer David Nicholls. It stars Saskia Reeves and Tom Holland as Connie and Douglas, a couple who are the classic combination of free spirit (Connie) and stuffed shirt (Douglas). They are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, a tour of Europe, with their teen son, Albie

(Tom Taylor, right with Reeves and Hollander) when Connie delivers Douglas some shock news: she wants out of their marriage. But Douglas doesn’t and when they decide they will still go away, he sets out to try to convince his wife to stay.

SCOTLAND’S SCENIC RAILWAYS

8PM, CH4 ★★★ Connecting coastal towns and rural villages, across moors and mountains, Scotland’s railways traverse stunning and unique landscapes. This programme meets the staff safeguarding the mainline tracks, as well as the enthusiasts who power the heritage steam lines, and keep the world-famous Flying Scotsman flying.

LOUIS THEROUX: LIFE ON THE EDGE

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Louis looks back at Weird Weekends that explored law and order in the US, when he met cops and criminals, on the streets and in prisons. America appears to have changed very little in the past three decades, with crime, poverty, drugs and racial tensions as problematic and destructive then as now.

THE SINGAPORE GRIP

9PM, ITV ★★★

In episode two, Matthew starts to learn more about how Walter and his family conduct business – and pleasure. But an eventful night with Monty, Joan and Miss Chiang proves too much for Matthew, who succumbs to a fever. The war, meanwhile, is about to make its presence felt in this sheltered part of the world.

SA

The Queen’s response to personal tragedies and national disasters.

10.00 Agatha Christie’s Poirot A woman fears for her life. David Suchet stars.

6.45pm River Monsters

7.15 World Series of Darts Finals Coverage of the evening session on day three of the tournament. 11.15 The Big Fish Off

THE HOLLIES: LOOK THROUGH ANY WINDOW

3.20PM, SKY ARTS ★★★ Nostalgic and very easy-to-watch documentary that’s filled with footage from 1963 to 1975, when the Manchester band had 27 singles in the UK top 40. In between it all are interviews with founding members Allan Clarke and Graham Nash.

BACHELOR IN PARADISE

6.15PM, ITVBE ★★★

There’s been plenty of drama for Caelynn (left) this season, and most of it has revolved around Dean – it was a big moment when he returned to the beach with a dramatic proposal and, more shockingly, without his moustache. Will she be on an even keel in this penultimate part?

AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST TRAIN JOURNEY

8PM, BBC4 ★★★

This gentle piece of ‘slow TV’ follows a train journey from the bottom to the top of Australia on board the Ghan (left). The trip from Adelaide to Darwin is 2,979km long, punctuated by plenty of on-screen facts and occasional insights from your train manager, Bruce.

ENEMY AT THE DOOR

9PM, TALKING PICTURES TV ★★★ Before he did Hi-de-hi!, Simon Cadell (left) oozed off the screen as SS officer Klaus Reinicke in this ITV drama about the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands. It was first shown between 1978 and 1980, and this episode finds Reinicke organising an uncomfortable dance for soldiers with the local girls.

9/11 PENTAGON SPECIAL

9PM, SKY HISTORY ★★★★ Construction was started on the Pentagon on September 11, 1941 – so it was 60 years later to the day when, in 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the side of the building. This new, one-off documentary hears accounts from survivors about what it was like on the inside during the attack.

THE FORGOTTEN WEST MEMPHIS THREE

9PM, SKY CRIME ★★★

In 1993, three eight-year-old boys were murdered, supposedly in a satanic ritual, but it seems the three teenagers sent to prison for 18 years for the crime (including Jessie Misskelley Jr, left) may not have done it. So, who did? This engaging new investigation looks for answers. (Sky 121, Virgin 135) RW
