GHOSTS

8.30PM, BBC1 ★★★★ Silliness is an undervalued virtue in comedy, and it’s at the heart of this returning show from the Horrible Histories gang. To recap: Charlotte Ritchie (right, bottom left) plays the inheritor of a rickety mansion she wants to turn into a luxury hotel, only it’s filled with ghosts who constantly get in the way. The spirits hail from down the centuries (caveman, aristocrat, soldier, MP, etc) and each has their own quirks and obsessions, many of which are on display in an opening episode in which the haunting becomes common knowledge, and attracts paying visitors.

INSIDE THE BOMB SQUAD

8PM, CH4 ★★★

Fireworks may have been used to create an explosive device in this new collection of callouts with the bomb squad. As ‘Podders’ (Sgt David Podmore, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq) inspects the ominous items in suburban Liverpool, 360-degree cameras give us some impression of the sense of danger this involves.

ROSE WEST & MYRA HINDLEY: THEIR UNTOLD STORY

★★★ Trevor Mcdonald speaks to ex-prisoners to learn what happened when the serial killers Rose West and Myra Hindley met and had an affair in prison. Some of the tales are sinister, some frank and almost funny: ‘She was this little fat donkey woman,’ says one of West, when she arrived.

BRAIN SURGEONS: BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH

9PM, CH4 ★★★★

This new series takes us inside the Neurological Centre in Southampton and, most intriguingly, inside the heads of its patients. There are plenty of insights into how our brains work as we meet 12-year-old Matthew, who is having a two-day operation to remove a brain tumour. ROBIN WIGGS

5.55pm A Touch of Frost

8.00 Agatha Christie’s Poirot

A woman is murdered during a flight.

10.10 DCI Banks Part 1/2. An accountant

is killed in his home by a hit man.

11.10 Agatha Christie’s Marple

THE RESIDENT

9PM, SKY WITNESS ★★★

The hospital has been taken over by greedy corporate overlords in the new, third season of this enjoyably acted US medical drama, and the doctors, such as surgeon Kit Voss (Jane Leeves, left), are asked to put profit before patients. They don’t take it lying down, as you’d imagine.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF WRITING

9PM, BBC4 ★★★

Humans have existed for roughly 300,000 years, but we’ve only been writing for around 5,000. This first of an intriguing new series explores the similarities between different writing systems around the world, and the reason we started scrawling – not for art, but for accounting and tax.
