THE GRAND PARTY HOTEL

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★ Liverpool is known for its lively night scene. One place really adding to this is the Shankly Hotel, and this new series steps through its doors. It opens with a woman hiding in a gift-wrapped box, so frivolity is high on the agenda, with everyone from drag queens to women celebrating divorces checking in. Looking after the guests are receptionist Fearne, doorman Eric and cleaner June (right), and their snobby new manager Lyndon, who’s as overwhelmed by the garish party rooms – sleeping up to 24 – as you’ll surely be.

It’s all good, harmless fun!

SAVING LIVES AT SEA

8PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Lyme Regis is a lovely piece of coastline, but harmony is disrupted when Sam, 18, who volunteers with his dad, Mark, races to help after a capsized dinghy is reported. But where are the missing sailors? There is also an emergency when a fishing vessel catches fire and its crew are forced to abandon ship, hoping help is close by.

LONDON ZOO: AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR

9PM, ITV ★★★

Lockdown has been a unique time, but the zookeepers at London and Whipsnade have had special challenges, as we see in this new series. In part one, they try to make sure Oni the okapi still gets antenatal care, and huntsman spiders meet to breed – but will there be caressing or cannibalism?

999: CRITICAL CONDITION

9PM, CH5 ★★★

This insightful series returns, as it goes inside Royal Stoke University Hospital to show the reality of emergency care. The staff are racing to help a man after a one-punch attack may leave him with an awful brain injury. And a man faces a tough decision over risky surgery to repair a tear in his heart. TESSA JONES

ADOLF HITLER’S WAR

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★

As this history of the Nazi drive into the USSR continues, Hitler splits his forces into two as a result of early success. As they arrived at the banks of the Volga, Stalin’s (left) reserve of one million men – of whom the Nazis were unaware – arrived, accompanied by a 90-strong band.

WORLD WAR II & CINEMA

8PM, SKY ARTS ★★★

Movies had come of age when the Second World War began, and this new series explores the films of the time. Cinemas provided a great escape from the horrors of war, and movies were made to boost morale; they could also satirise, like Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (left).

PUBLIC EYE

9PM, TALKING PICTURES TV ★★★ Alfred Burke is the star of this offbeat twist on the private eye genre, which was shown on ITV between 1965 and 1975. Frank (Burke, left) is shabby and uninspiring to look at, very far from your usual hero, and almost like something out of noir. In this case from 1969, he makes an uncomfortable career move.

RICH KIDS, SKINT HOLIDAY

9PM, 5STAR ★★★

Roumaissa (left) is the first well-off youth bound for a reality check as this series returns. The 19-year-old usually spends hundreds a week on ‘fine dining’, so what will she make of a trip to a caravan in Norfolk with the Cope family, eating homemade spag bol? The results are sweeter than you’d expect.

ED STAFFORD: FIRST MAN OUT

9PM, DISCOVERY ★★★

The ex-british Army man returns for a new series of pitting his survival skills against his peers. Ed’s first opponent this time around was once his teacher – prehistoric survival skills specialist Will Lord (left), who looks like he’s just walked out of the caveman display at the Natural History Museum. THE COUNTRY SHOW WITH BOB HARRIS

9PM, RADIO 2 HHHH Broken relationships and the strain of touring had Kathleen Edwards leaving the world of music and opening up a coffee shop, called Quitters. Just as her life seemed to be on the mend, a con man walked into Quitters and spun a web of love and lies, leaving Kathleen brokenhearted. This time, though, she found her way out of depression through music. Tonight, Kathleen gives us a live session from her Canadian home, of music from her new album, Total Freedom. SJ
