THE ROMANTICS AND US WITH SIMON SCHAMA

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Sadly, this is the final episode of Simon Schama’s hugely educational series. Simon (pictured) is looking at how modern ideals on tribes are influenced by the Romantics. He muses on how pride in our home nations can be uplifting, or lead down a dark path – and the tribal fury of the past that still very much remains. He examines the Swiss propensity for nostalgia – once treated as a medical condition – looks into the Brothers Grimm tales, and roams Scotland to show Robert Burns’s inspiration, with a reading from Harriet Walter.

GARDENERS’ WORLD

8PM, BBC2 ★★★

In a special round-up edition, Adam Frost looks at some of the most spectacular gardens the show has visited over the years. There are also plenty of tips, as usual, with Joe Swift learning new tricks from a city garden. Elsewhere, a couple let nature dictate their planting, and we meet a gardener who focuses on containers.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF: AN EXTRA SLICE

8PM, CH4 ★★★★

If you’re as excited as we were to have Bake Off back on our screens, then you’ll also be rejoicing at the return of its brilliant companion show. Jo Brand welcomes new host Matt Lucas, along with AJ Odudu, Richard Osman and regular Tom Allen, as they comically slice up Cake Week.

SECRET SCOTLAND WITH SUSAN CALMAN

8PM, CH5 ★★★★

This week, Susan is heading to the Trossachs and west of Scotland, which are filled with breathtaking scenery and a mass of interesting history. She visits the exquisite Castle of Inveraray, learns the secret to smoked salmon, and later helps to train sheepdogs using… ducks! TESSA JONES

THE DUMPING GROUND

5PM, CBBC ★★★★

The Bafta-winning drama about a children’s care home kicks off the new, second half of its eighth series. Sasha (a Bafta-nominated Annabelle Davis, left) is excited about the approach of her birthday, so let’s hope everyone remembers, or there might be big trouble…

CBEEBIES BEDTIME STORIES

6.50PM, CBEEBIES ★★★

It’s no fun being a cloud – wherever you go, people are rarely pleased to see you. Dermot O’leary (left), who seems to have the exact opposite effect on people, has chosen to read Tim Hopgood’s tale of Cyril The Lonely Cloud for this new episode of Cbeebies’ cosy storytelling show.

SAY YES TO THE DRESS: LANCASHIRE

9PM, TLC ★★★ Bride-to-be Wendy (left) is 60, wants a ‘boobilicious’ dress, and has £3,000 to spend on one from Gok Wan in this fun new episode. Wendy’s entourage of family and friends are rather less keen on her flashing the flesh, though: ‘You’re not Katie Price,’ remarks one. Will she be deterred?

AUSTRALIAN HITS AT THE BBC

9PM, BBC4 ★★★

Over the years, the Aussie invasion of our charts hasn’t just been down to soap stars looking for another career, like Kylie and Jason (left). This compilation of performances also features INXS, AC/DC, Aborigine band Yothu Yindi, The Easybeats and John Farnham

– the singer of You’re The Voice.

ROB RIGGLE: GLOBAL INVESTIGATOR

9PM, DISCOVERY ★★★

Humour can be a good way to learn, and the comic Rob Riggle (left) brings a lot of that to this history series. Tonight, he’s looking for the treasure of the pirate ‘Black Caesar’ in Florida. ‘I haven’t understood most of this,’ he reflects on what he’s learned before diving in search of gold. ‘But it sounds promising.’

WHY WOMEN KILL

9PM, ALIBI ★★★

In the first of a double bill, both Simone and Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin, left) find themselves in thoroughly embarrassing situations. Behind those farce-like moments, though, lies the darker question of which corner of each of this show’s three love triangles will end up dead. RW

50 MORE THINGS THAT MADE THE MODERN ECONOMY

11.30PM, RADIO 4 HHH Alarmed by the progress the USSR was making in the space race, President Eisenhower founded the Advanced Research Projects Agency. The agency was to work on highly experimental projects, but was thought of as a dead end. History had other ideas, as Tim Harford explains in this account of ARPA’S development of the internet and ‘the most important hunk of silicon you’ve never heard of’.
