WHEN LıVES COLLIDE

The residents of four adjoining flats find their paths crossing in dramatic fashion in a new series from the Doctor Foster creator

The spirit of Doctor Foster lives on in a new six-part series from creator Mike Bartlett that brings two of its characters back. In BBC1’S Life, we find out what happened to Anna

Baker and her philandering accountant husband Neil, GP Gemma Foster’s neighbours in the hugely successful series.

Life centres on the intertwining stories of the occupants of four flats in a huge house in Manchester. Anna, who was last seen leaving her husband in Doctor Foster, is one of them. She now lives alone, with a new name and a new job. ‘Mike felt Anna’s story was just beginning, so he’s reinvented her as Belle, a Pilates teacher,’ says Victoria Hamilton, who’s reprising the role. ‘Like everybody else in the drama, she’s sort of struggling. She’s at a point in life where every challenge has piled in at once.’

Those challenges include a mentally ill sister, who takes a turn for the worse in episode one, leaving Belle to look after her badly behaved teenage niece Maya. And later she’s reacquainted with her ex-husband Neil, again played by Adam James.

The other major characters are David (Adrian Lester), who’s been happily married but is torn by temptation when he meets an impulsive woman on holiday. Then there’s heavily pregnant Hannah (Corrie’s Melissa Johns) who lives with her safe and stable partner. But the return of Andy, the father of her unborn child, causes big issues. The biggest flat is occupied by Gail (Alison Steadman) and her domineering husband Henry (Peter Davison). It takes seeing an old friend to make Gail realise what a bully he’s become.
