MCQUEEN

(2018) 15 ◆

Saturday, 9.45pm, BBC2 ★★★★ Alexander Mcqueen (above, with Kate Moss), once the enfant terrible of fashion, designed clothes for rock stars and other rebels, and his controversial runway shows were must-see spectacles for those in the know. But even if fashion has passed you by, this documentary is so visually arresting that you can’t help being swept up in Mcqueen’s story, from humble beginnings to haute couture. But this rags-to-rag-trade-riches tale does not have a happy ending, of course: Mcqueen committed suicide in 2010, aged just 40. His legacyliveson, however, andthis film serves as a fitting tribute to the man and his talent; be warned, though – there is strong language, and Mcqueen’s designs still have the power to shock.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

(1959) PG ● Sunday, 4.50pm, BBC2 ★★★★★ A film by Alfred Hitchcock is always a reliable Classic Film Choice when one is shown on TV. No other director – British or otherwise, alive or dead – has done more to shape modern cinema with a body of work so substantial, diverse and popular. North By Northwest is among his greats, alongside Rear Window, Psycho and Vertigo. It has the star power of an effortlessly charming Cary Grant (above), a dizzying plot of twists and turns, nail-biting action and suspense. Grant is the ‘wrong man’ trying to outrun the dangerous fallout of being mistaken for a spy (who doesn’t actually exist), and hauling along mysterious Eva Marie Saint for the ride. Fast-paced and funny, it takes in some of the director’s biggestever scenes – you can’t get much bigger than Mount Rushmore.
