Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep and Julie Walters return, while Cher sparkles as she sings about an old lover called Fernando. Sunny Mabrey plays a desperate woman who goes on the run with her children to escape an abusive husband. The trouble is that he is a powerful District Attorney, and will do anything to get them back. THE DAM BUSTERS (1955) PG ● THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA HHHH (2006) PG ● HHHH Stirring stuff, this tells the true story behind Operation Chastise, the wonderful codename used for the campaign to destroy German dams in 1943. Michael Redgrave (below) heads the cast as Barnes Wallis, the inventor of those ingenious bouncing bombs. 6.50PM, SONY MOVIES P.S. I LOV EYOU AN EMMA FIELDING MYSTERY 2 – PAST MALICE (2007) 12 ◆ Meryl Streep (below) is on wickedly good form as the fierce fashion magazine editor whose team of staff fear and worship her in equal measure. Anne Hathaway plays the aspiring writer who has to watch her back. HHH HH (2018) PG ● Hilary Swank stars in this weepy about love and loss. She plays a widow receiving a series of heartfelt messages that her husband (Gerard Butler, above, with Swank) had arranged to have delivered before he died. The sleuthing archaeolog­ist Emma Fielding (Courtney Thorne-smith, above) is back for another murder mystery and here, she’s hired to consult on the acquisitio­n of a castle-like estate. According to local legend, the place is cursed – and she finds herself with a body. ABOUT TIME (2013) 12 ◆ SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON HHH (1964) Richard Curtis’s time-travel romcom is a real charmer. Domhnall Gleeson is the sappy chap with exceptiona­l talents who sets his sights on delightful Rachel Mcadams – but has to do a lot of legwork to win her over... HHHH PG 6.45PM, TPTV ● Atmospheri­c British psychologi­cal mystery. The seance of the title is staged by Kim Stanley’s medium, who believes she is connected to the spirit world by her dead son. NORTH BY NORTHWEST DEADPOOL HHHH (1959) PG (2016) 15 ● ◆ THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES HHHHH Marvel’s sweariest superhero crashes on to the big screen in this origin story, the eighth film in the X-men franchise. Ryan Reynolds nails it as the mercenary motivated by love to find a cure for his terminal illness. A third Deadpool film is in the works. 4.50PM, BBC2 (2017) 12 ◆ HHH See Classic Film Choice (right). Starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, this adaptation of a 2011 novel by Charles Martin follows two strangers who share a harrowing yet intimate ordeal after their aircraft goes down in Utah’s mountains. (2017) 12 ◆ YES MAN (2008) 12 ◆ HHH HHHH Jim Carrey (left) is nicely cast as the loser whose life is transforme­d when he decides to take positivity to new levels –andtonever­say never again. Carrey as veasever a comedy that costars Bradley Cooper and Zooey Deschanel. Tensions between simians and humans escalate in this bold addition to the enduring franchise. Woody Harrelson is the tyrant in charge of a rogue military outpost, declaring war on chimp leader Caesar (Andy Serkis, above), who prepares to fight back. MCQUEEN (2018) 15 ◆ THE EQUALIZER HHHH 9.45PM, BBC2 (2014) 15 ◆ HHH See The Big Movie (right). 9PM, ITV4 Murky, with shades of Taxi Driver, this reboot of the 1980s TV series stars Denzel Washington as the retired black-ops soldier who comes out of retirement to help a troubled teen (Chloe Grace Moretz) who is in too deep with the Russian mob. BAD NEIGHBOURS (2014) 15 ◆ HHH 10.45PM, ITV is divisi in Out-of-control one-upmanship comedy with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne (below) as the nice couple resorting to dirty tricks after a their lives. COP LAND HHHH (1997) 15 9PM, ITV4 ◆ This gritty crime drama has a fabulous cast, including Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Harvey Keitel. Stallone plays a suburban sheriff working on the edge of New York City, who becomes embroiled in high-stakes police corruption. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST bunch of party animals disrupt (1952) U ● HHHH For many, this is the definitive version of Oscar Wilde’s play. Anthony Asquith directs an exemplary cast led by Michael Redgrave and Michael Denison, with Edith Evans on unforgetta­ble form as Lady Bracknell. PANIC ROOM (2002) 15 ◆ HHHH A slick ‘women in peril’ thriller from reliable David Fincher (of Se7en fame). Jodie Foster and a very young Kristen Stewart are the mother and daughter under attack and taking refuge in their home’s so-called panic room – thinking they’ll be safe there… THE FAULT IN OUR STARS (2014) 12 ◆ HHH SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998) 15 ◆ Shailene Woodley plays a teenager with cancer, who meets a cute boy (Ansel Elgort) in group therapy – and slowly lets down her guard. Both young leads are excellent. DEEPWATER HORIZON HHHH (2016) 12 ◆ Steven Spielberg’s Second World War drama balances moments of explosive action, nail-biting tension and heartfelt sentiment. Tom Hanks (above) leads a mission to bring home Matt Damon’s Ryan. HHHH Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell star in this drama about the shocking 2010 oil rig disaster. It focuses on the desperate heroics of those on the rig when it exploded, but also points the finger squarely at the failings of the executives who ignored safety warnings. DEPARTURE (2015) 15 ◆ HHH 11.45PM, FILM4 THE WATER DIVINER (2014) Languid drama, set in France, starring Juliet Stevenson as a woman facing a new stage of her life after separating from her husband, with her son (Alex Lawther) doing the same. The film belongs, heart and soul, to Stevenson (right, with Lawther). JOHN WICK HHH 15 ◆ (2014) 15 ◆ Russell Crowe directs and stars in this post-first World War drama. It follows an Australian farmer (Crowe, right) – also a diviner of water – as he travels to Turkey to find his three sons, who are missing, presumed dead, after serving with the Anzacs at Gallipoli. HHHH Keanu Reeves stars in this heavily stylised revenge thriller. He plays a deadpan hit man who comes out of retirement when gangsters murder his puppy. Defiantly enjoyable stuff, it inspired two sequels, and is buoyed along nicely by the likeable Reeves. THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS HHH (2008) 12 11.30PM, BBC2 ◆ Harrowing subject matter is handled in a sensitive way in Mark Herman’s Holocaust tale.
