ALISON HAMMOND: BACK TO SCHOOL

9PM, ITV ★★★★

ITV has commissioned several new shows for Black History Month (including tonight’s new panel game Sorry, I Didn’t Know at 10.45pm) and here, This Morning favourite Alison (right, at Hampton Court Palace with historian Michael Ohajuru) sets out to discover the black figures whose stories have been hidden in Britain’s history. It’s a revelatory journey from Roman times to the trenches of the First World War, featuring unheralded black people whose achievements have been absent from the school curriculum for too long.

SURGEONS: AT THE EDGE OF LIFE

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★ The return of the acclaimed series that reveals the often extraordinary work carried out by some of the country’s top surgeons at Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals in Cambridge. In the first episode, doctors stop a patient’s heart and drain the blood from her entire body to save her life. It defies belief.

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

★★★★ Sadly, it’s the final episode of this warm-hearted drama, but it’s been such a ratings hit for Channel 5 that it will doubtless return next year. As we prepare to say farewell, the Dales are in the grip of a bitter winter, Siegfried has flu and James’s workload has doubled. Will the poor vet get any time off to celebrate his birthday?

MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT

9.30PM, CH4 ★★★

The return of the show where single people skip the dating stage and marry complete strangers whom they will first meet at the altar. Just four people were selected from 7,000 applicants and now, their future happiness is in the hands of US dating guru Paul C. Brunson, who is known as the ‘Love Doctor’. MM

DRAIN THE OCEANS

8PM, NAT GEOGRAPHIC ★★★ Four wrecks shed light on the Battle of Britain in the first of this flashily interesting returning history series. The first is a crashed Hurricane off the coast of Waltonon-the-naze, the final dogfighting moments of which are cleverly re-created from RAF records.

THE THIRD DAY

9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★★

The second trio of episodes of Sky’s Wicker Man-style drama picks up the new story of mum Helen (Naomie Harris, left), who visits Osea on holiday with her two children. It all seems normal at first – arguments about screen time in the car, that sort of thing – but that doesn’t last.

FORGED IN FIRE

9PM, BLAZE ★★★

Past contenders return in this newto-freeview season of the US bladeforging contest. They include Chris, whose last stint on the show came shortly after losing his wife to cancer, and Rae, whose family teased her for going out in the first round. (Freeview 63, Freesat 162, Sky 164, Virgin 216)
