PICK OF THE DAY
SECRET SCOTLAND WITH SUSAN CALMAN
8PM, CH5 ★★★★
The comedian is unearthing more hidden Scottish gems, this time in Grampian and the Central Highlands. She begins her journey in Perthshire, visiting Blair Castle, which has a unique claim to fame as the home of Europe’s only private army. Then it’s off to the Cairngorms to meet Britain’s only wild reindeer herd, before she concludes her tour at Culloden, the site of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s famous defeat. There, she is given the honour of holding Charles’s sword – and learns of her ancestor’s fate on the bloody battlefield.
8PM, BBC2 ★★★
In the penultimate episode, vet Jennie breathes new life into Beau the retired show chicken, while Darren treats a two-day-old lamb. Then, in our final visit to Mourne, spring has arrived, and vet Terry is on a call-out to a local farm, one of 12 such visits he will make every day as lambing season kicks off in earnest.
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★
At Longmeadow, Monty Don prepares his pond for the season ahead, prunes a climbing rose, and celebrates the garden as it moves into autumn. There’s also a second chance to enjoy Carol Klein’s autumnal visit to Hidcote Gardens, and we meet a couple whose garden has been inspired by their travels in the Far East.
