ONE RESILIENT RHINO
I was filming at the Kariega Game Reserve in South Africa for a BBC programme when I met Thandi in 2013. She was hiding behind a bush, but we knew it was her because she didn’t have a horn (above). A year earlier, Thandi had been one of three rhinos brutally mutilated by poachers, who removed their horns with a machete. Amazingly, she not only survived, but nearly three years later she gave birth to a female named Thembi... which in the local Xhosa language means ‘hope’. She is now the figurehead of rhino conservation across Africa.
