STOP THAT PIGEON? NO CHANCE!
During World War I, pigeons carried vital messages across enemy territory. In 1918, outnumbered by the Germans and out of ammunition, the US 77th Infantry Division sent Cher Ami (right) for help. The bird took a bullet to the chest and fell to the ground but miraculously took off again, flying 25 miles to deliver the message dangling from a broken leg sustained in the fall, and 194 men were saved. When he died, the taxidermist mounting his body discovered that ‘he’ had been a she all along.
