THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

(2017) PG ● Sunday, 7pm, Ch4 ★★★★ Here’s a film with one purpose and one purpose only: to make you feel good. It’s a fictionalised musical version of the life of Phineas Taylor Barnum, a 19th-century showman and entrepreneur who took circus from sideshow to mainstream entertainment, popularising a crowd-pleasing format and acts that still thrive today in TV shows such as Britain’s Got Talent. Hugh Jackman’s Barnum (above) is a charming, upbeat fellow (the real P.T. Barnum was rather more complex) who builds his travelling show from scratch, with loyal wife Charity (Michelle Williams) at his side. Barnum goes on to make a mint, but in this version of his story, it happens only with the support of his loyal circus family – bearded ladies, freaks and all.

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT

(1967) 15 ◆ Saturday, 12.10am, BBC2 ★★★★★

Sidney Poitier broke through the race barrier in Hollywood as the first black actor to win an Oscar, for Lilies Of The Field in 1964, and in this crime thriller, his character faces racism head on. Passing through a small Mississippi town, Poitier’s Virgil Tibbs (above) is picked up by police not long after the murder of a businessman. As a black man with dollars in his pocket, Virgil – or should that be Mr Tibbs? – is their prime suspect. At the station, he is calm and dignified, in contrast to shouty, slouchy police chief Gillespie (an Oscar-winning Rod Steiger). Virgil isn’t just the wrong man, he’s a Philadelphia police officer and a homicide expert. Reluctantly, he stays to assist with the case, keeping his cool in the face of prejudice and suspicion.

STRICTLY COME DANCING

7.50PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ Prepare for socially distanced sparkle as Strictly returns. Yes, there will be Covid changes – audiences will be cut back, dancers and celebs will form ‘support bubbles’, Bruno Tonioli won’t be in the studio with his fellow judges and so on – but the glittery heart of the show remains unchanged. Tonight, this year’s sequinclad stars discover who their professional partners are going to be. The big question is: Who’s going to dance with Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Nicola Adams (right) in the show’s first-ever same-sex couple? All will be revealed…

ROYAL ACADEMY SUMMER EXHIBITION

8.15PM, BBC2 ★★★★

It may be an autumn/winter exhibition rather than a summer one for the first time since 1769, but the delayed start hasn’t diluted the quality of the art on display. Look out for new works by Tracey Emin, Rebecca Horn, Anselm Kiefer, Julian Schnabel, Gillian Wearing and Ai Weiwei.

THE SHINING (1980) 15

9.15PM, BBC2 ★★★★★ One of the best Stephen King adaptations, this is not that faithful to its source (and King wasn’t happy), but Stanley Kubrick invests his psychological supernatural thriller with visual flair and buckets of menace. Jack Nicholson is the dad losing his grip in the Overlook Hotel.

THE MILLION POUND CUBE CELEBRITY

9PM, ITV ★★★

It’s not just the jackpot that’s grown for the new series; now, teams of two take on the Cube. Ahead of the start of the regular show – it runs from Monday to Friday this week – comes this special, with Jason Manford (and brother) and Mo Gilligan (and best friend) competing for charity cash.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION (2015) 12

9.15PM, CH4 ★★★

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt returns for a fifth film, showing off more nimble – sometimes topless – stuntwork. When the Impossible Mission Force is absorbed by the CIA, Hunt goes it alone to target a mysterious organisation known as the Syndicate.

BEATRICE AND EUGENIE: PAMPERED PRINCESSES?

9.15PM, CH5 ★★★

They are often mocked as dictionary-definition idle royals, but is there more to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie than meets the eye? This film argues that there is, hearing from friends and family about two loyal young women who do a great deal of charity work. CERI THOMAS

12.10AM, BBC2 ★★★★★ Seething, racially charged thriller from Norman Jewison. Sidney Poitier stars as the city cop who, stranded in a small Mississippi town, is arrested – because he is a stranger and black. Co-star Rod Steiger won one of the film’s Oscars. See Classic Film Choice, page 23.

The Russell Howard Hour

SHARPE’S RIFLES

11.20AM, DRAMA ★★★★

The Sharpe series was a tougher, grittier proposition to begin with, as this first-ever episode from 1993 shows. Sharpe’s Rifles finds Sean Bean’s risen-from-the-ranks officer (left) struggling to avoid being murdered by his new charges, let alone lead them.

IN REBECCA’S FOOTSTEPS

1PM, PBS AMERICA ★★★

This profile paints a picture of how the life of Daphne du Maurier (left), was split between her prolific work as an author and as Lady Browning, accompanying Sir Frederick to highsociety events. If you’re a fan of her thriller Rebecca, Netflix has a new film of it from Wednesday.

INSPECTOR MONTALBANO

9PM, BBC4 ★★★★

The short but sweet new series of the Sicilian drama ends with tonight’s second of two cases. Film is a running theme here as six discovered films of the same wall suggest a mystery, and the arrival of a Swedish movie crew affords Montalbano (Luca Zingaretti, left) a charming social opportunity.

TASKMASTER

10.15PM, E4 ★★★

Series four of this madcap challenge was a good one, and E4 begins a repeat of it tonight. Hugh Dennis proves to be a devious competitor, while Mel Giedroyc (left) and Noel Fielding both take offbeat approaches to the tasks. You can find the rest of this run, and the rest of the first nine series, on All 4.

TAGGART

11.15PM, DRAMA ★★★ The first-ever instalment of the Glasgow crime drama has some nice glints of wry humour – when we first meet Mark Mcmanus’s terse and easily irritated detective (left), he’s wearing a Big Daddy dressing gown. You can also find all 110 episodes available on demand, via the STV Player. ROBIN WIGGS
