uOUT OF HER MIND

10PM, BBC2 ★★★

When a show starts with a spangly leotard-clad figure on rollerskates (Sara Pascoe, right centre, with Juliet Stevenson and Fiona Button) breaking the fourth wall to announce, ‘Hello, I’m the main character,’ you know that this new sitcom isn’t aiming to be conventional. Pascoe plays a caricature of herself, a self-obsessed kook with epic boundary issues, who interrupts clashes with her family (including Stevenson as her mum) to lecture us on how this whole sitcom thing is going. Weird? Yes. Likeable? Just about.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF

8PM, CH4 ★★★★★ It’s pastry week in the tent, and the remaining bakers kick off proceedings with a Cornish signature dish, before Prue sets a retro challenge in the technical round. Then, only the showstopper lies between one of them and the title of star baker. And how hard can it be to rustle up a tart hidden inside a pastry cage?

LIFE

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★ The boundaries between the lives of the flat-dwelling neighbours continue to crumble as the six-part drama reaches its fourth episode. Henry struggles with the effects of Gail’s decision,

Neil makes Belle an offer that sparks a confrontation, and Hannah and Liam host a dinner party where secrets are very definitely on the menu.

SURGEONS: AT THE EDGE OF LIFE

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★ It’s hard to imagine a pair of operations more jawdroppingly difficult than the ones on the table here. First up, the neurosurgeons at Addenbrooke’s have to peel away at a tumour on a patient’s spinal cord. Then, the specialists at the Royal Papworth have to perform a double lung transplant. CT

MISS MARPLE

8PM, DRAMA ★★★★★

This regular weekly slot for the

Joan Hickson Miss Marples continues with a classic instalment. Here, the sleuth (left) uncovers a hive of villainy behind the prim facade of Bertram’s Hotel in London, an establishment based on Brown’s, where Agatha Christie often stayed.

RESTORATION WORKSHOP

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★

There’s a change of tack for the final episode, which follows Gary to Fawley Decorative Fair, the eclectic event he co-runs with Lady Judy Mcalpine at her Fawley Hill estate. ‘Gary is a lunatic, and it’s lovely, because we understand each other,’ reflects Lady Mcalpine (left).

GREATEST EVER CELEBRITY WIND UPS

8PM, 5STAR ★★★ There are a few gems in the first of this new series, one of which is Ant and Dec’s dining-in-the-dark prank on Bear Grylls. Look out, too, for Girls Aloud ‘storming off’ the set of

kids’ TV show, and Bradley Walsh donning a disguise to prank 1990s Gotcha king Noel Edmonds (left).

a

THE THIRD DAY

9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★★

The grim finale knits the stories of Helen (Naomie Harris, left) and Sam together, and does so in a more satisfying way than you might have suspected from the show’s early episodes. Jude Law gives a rewarding performance as Sam, who is now properly unhinged. Or is he?

A HOLE IN BABYLON: PLAY FOR TODAY

10PM, BBC4 ★★★★

First shown in 1979, this tense Play

For Today re-creates the Spaghetti House siege of 1975, when three men took hostages at a London restaurant in the name of black liberation.

Alfred Maron and Trevor Thomas (left) star in a still powerful mix of drama and archive footage. RW
